Diego Garcia: A Human Rights Cause Humanitarian Bombardiers Won’t Touch With a Six Foot Pole

Too useful for lobbing bombs and ruling the oceans

Well what do you know. UK Supreme Court has ruled that Chagos islanders do not have the right to return to their native Diego Garcia island.

Diego Garcia, of course, is the strategically extremely useful piece of real estate that sits smack dab in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Which is why Americans maintain a military air and naval base there.

The island is nominally a British possession which the Brits grabbed during the Napoleonic Wars from the French. Even so in the late 1960s the UK kindly allowed its imperial overlord to base its armed forces there.

Trouble is there wasn’t really enough room on the small island for its population and American military both, so of course the former had to go. The British first harassed then finally rounded up the natives and quietly deported them – mainly to Mauritius over 1,000 nautical miles to the west.

On the land thus vacated the Americans then set up a base absurdly — and shamelessly –styled ‘Camp Justice’.

The excuse the UK Supreme Court cited to justify its depraved ruling was that rehabitation of the island was not practical as life there would be precarious — as if this was its call to make.

But this is merely the latest of desperate obfuscations by London to defend the clearings. Originally in the 1960s and 70s British authorities thus claimed Diego Garcia had no permanently settled population albeit the island had begun to be settled 200 years earlier:

Before the Americans came, more than 2,000 people lived on the islands, many with roots back to the late 18th century. There were thriving villages, a school, a hospital, a church, a railway and an undisturbed way of life

It is a clear the forced exile of the Chagossians is an outrage and an injustice that if it had been carried out by nation less civilized than Britain would be styled ethnic cleansing — not the least by London which is so eager to pursue moral crusades in the Balkan and the Middle East.

And so this is another sad episode which unmasks the phoniness and the narcissism of western humanitarian militarists.

Supposedly human rights outrages poke a huge hole in their giant humanitarian hearts. So much so that they have to bomb and invade other countries to make themselves feel wholesome again.

And yet here is an injustice that should check all their boxes — unspoiled brown people forcefully removed from their paradise of an island by insensitive and powerful militarists — and yet pro-establishment humanitarians are nowhere to be found.

Samantha Power, Susan Rice, Hillary Clinton, Christiane Amanpour, Tony Blair…where are you on this?

And that’s keeping in mind that the outrage here is being committed by London as per the wishes of Washington. Which if anything means British and American bleeding hearts bombardiers have much more influence to affect change even without promoting violence as they’re normally inclined to do.

But I guess humanitarian bleeding heartism isn’t half as fun when it doesn’t involve moral grandstanding against inferior, less civilized nations than your own.
