COVID Vaccine Has Amazing Pro-Family Side Effects, Just Ask Gavin Newsom

Gavin Newsom’s office has refused to say what family obligations caused him to cancel his trip to the United Nations climate change conference in Scotland, but his wife, First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom, seemed to give a clue in a tweet she sent and then quickly deleted Sunday evening.

“It’s funny how certain folks can’t handle truth,” Siebel Newsom wrote. “When someone cancels something, maybe they’re just in the office working; maybe in their free time they’re at home with their family, at their kids’ sports matches, or dining out with their wife. Please stop hating and get a life.”

The post was public only a few minutes before it was deleted.

The Newsoms had planned to be in Scotland Nov. 1 through Nov. 3. Newsom’s office announced three days before their scheduled departure he and Siebel Newsom were no longer going, and that Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis would instead lead California’s delegation to the conference.

“Due to family obligations, Governor Newsom will no longer be traveling to the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) and will instead be participating virtually, focusing on California’s landmark climate change policies,” spokeswoman Erin Mellon wrote in a statement announcing the cancellation.

Newsom’s office said the governor would instead participate in the conference virtually. In response to questions about what events he participated in, his office said simply that he would participate in events this week. His office has not yet announced what those are.

The conference, which began Oct. 31 and runs through the end of this week, has brought leaders from across the globe together in Glasgow to discuss strategies to slow the pace of global warming. Prior to the governor’s cancellation, former Gov. Jerry Brown and environmental activists said Newsom would play an important role by presenting the Golden State’s ambitious policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as a model for other governments.

Lawmakers at the conference reiterated that Newsom stayed home because of a family matter when asked Monday about his absence.

“Everything they said to us is that it’s a family issue,” state Sen. Bob Hertzberg, D-Los Angeles, told reporters. “There is nobody in California who wanted to be at this conference more than Gavin Newsom… But we are all human beings… Sometimes you need to stay home.”

Newsom’s last held a public event on Oct. 27, when he received a COVID-19 vaccine booster at an Oakland clinic. No events were canceled because of the booster shot and Newsom did not have a reaction to the vaccine, his spokesman Daniel Lopez said.

Although he was out of the public eye, Lopez said Newsom was still working last week.

“Last week Governor Newsom worked in the Capitol with staff on urgent issues including COVID-19 vaccines for kids, boosters, ports, the forthcoming state budget and California’s continued economic recovery,” Lopez said in a statement. “He will have public events this week related to the economy and vaccines.”

Over the weekend, Vogue reported Newsom attended a wedding for Ivy Love Getty, the great granddaughter of J. Paul Getty, in San Francisco. Photos from the wedding show Newsom wearing a mask during the ceremony. Lopez confirmed Newsom and Siebel Newsom attended the ceremony but not the reception. He said the wedding was not one of the family obligations that prompted the Newsoms to cancel their Scotland trip.
