Bolsonaro Defies US Pressure to Confirm Visit With Putin, Says Hopes for a “Harmonious” Resolution
Will be looking to expand bilateral trade
The U.S. government has urged Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to cancel a visit with President Vladimir Putin in Russia due to rising tensions over its troop build-up near Ukraine, a person with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.
The diplomatic push, first reported by newspaper Folha de S.Paulo, appears to be part of a global effort by the United States to isolate Russia amid concerns of a possible Ukraine conflict.
“It’s not a good time to go,” said the source, adding that U.S. officials had “tried to dissuade (Bolsonaro) from taking the trip,” stressing it could prove a “miscalculation.”
“The United States, Brazil and other democratic nations have a responsibility to stand up for democratic principles and to protect the rules-based order, and to reinforce this message to Russia at every opportunity,” said the State Department official.
Has also defied domestic neocons and Washington bootlickers, styling Putin a fellow conservative, The Guardian:
“He’s a conservative,” the far-right populist told his supporters of Putin on Thursday. “Oh yeah?” one replied.
Bolsonaro’s move, which analysts believe is designed to project the idea that Brazil’s internationally isolated leader still boasts powerful foreign friends, baffled many pundits.
“Has Bolsonaro gone mad?” the editor of the political newsletter Meio, Pedro Doria, asked of the “utterly reckless” enterprise.
Ricardo Rangel, a columnist for the conservative magazine Veja, urged ministers to resign over “the most insane trip of all”. “Showing support for Putin just as he threatens to wage a war of conquest is unforgivable from the point of view of the US or Europe, our main partners along with China,” he wrote, predicting “a diplomatic nightmare” if an invasion was launched during Bolsonaro’s visit.
The conservative politician Heni Ozi Cukier voiced bewilderment over the trip and Bolsonaro’s claim Putin was a man of the right. “Our president hasn’t the slightest clue what’s going on in the world. He hasn’t the slightest clue who Putin is, much less what it means to be a conservative,” he tweeted.
Bolsonaro says while in Moscow he will stick to bilateral trade issues and not raise other topics. This is perhaps a shame. Using the opportunity to share his experience defying the virus derangement cult with Putin may have been welcome by ordinary Russians who near-uniformly wish their president was more like Bolsonaro in this regard.
” The United States, Brazil and other democratic nations have a responsibility to stand up for democratic principles and to protect the rules-based order, and to reinforce this message to Russia at every opportunity,” said the State Department official.
There isn ‘t a word in the dictionary to define the US Government today. And using the word ” Democratic “is the furthest from the Truth. How did all these Government workers get so MK Ultra – Ultra’d Out ?
The west invades countries illegally then turns around and cries crocodile tears about Russia might invade Ukraine. Russia need to respect sovereignty…just this week Biden sent more troop to Syria which US was not invited in nor those it had a UN mandate to be there.
I’m assuming that Brazilians are poised to oust Bolsonaro and reinstall the jailbird Lula ?
I am sure the CIA is working on this. Hopefully his plane arrives safely in Moscow.
Bolsonaro has proven to be something of a maverick.
Given Brazil’s potential on the world stage – one to watch.
