MINSK, January 21 (TASS) — The externally-controlled Ukrainian leadership behaves in an unpredictable way, so the border with this country must be heavily defended, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said during his trip to the Brest Region.

“With a pain in our heart we observe everything that happens in Ukraine. Its current political leadership, acting under an external control, sometimes behaves in an unpredictable and inadequate way. So we must make decision for this case: unpredictability, inadequacy, and, god forbid, military action,” he said, according to BelTA.

He noted that almost 1,500 km of border between Ukraine and Belarus is a significant distance.

“Whatever the cost, we must not only see what is happening at the border, we also must defend it reliably,” he underscored.

“Just ten years ago, nobody could have imagined that we will have to establish military units and an entire force to protect our southern borders,” the President said.

MINSK, 17 January (Belta) – Ukraine is building up its military presence near the Belarusian borders, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he heard out a report on the plan of a joint military exercise of the Belarusian and Russian armies on 17 January, BelTA informs.

According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, the situation on the southern borders of Belarus is concerning. “Ukraine is building up its military presence deploying forces of the national guard from ‘radical nationalists’. This is more striking than NATO’s troops. All that is going on near the State Border of our country. They are allegedly going to fight against migrants. Migrants will not go there in any case. They are not going to Ukraine, and we understand that. Ukrainian people are leaving their own country, and they are going to ‘protect themselves from migrants from Belarus’,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said ironically.

The special operation Polesye is being held near the Belarusian borders, up to 10,000 soldiers have been deployed in the near-border zone. “The dynamics is as follows: they are building up their military presence near the southern borders of our country,” the president said.

MINSK, 17 January (Belta) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko approved the plan of a joint operational exercise of the Armed Forces of Belarus and Russia, BelTA has learned.

As it has been reported, the exercise is scheduled for February. It will be held on the western and southern borders of Belarus.

“As you know, the Russian president and I agreed in December last year to hold snap exercises on the western border of the Union State and on the southern border of Belarus, which is also the border of the Union State. Today we see the need to hold full-scale exercises in the western and southern regions,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

“These should be full-scale exercises to drill a certain plan of action against the following forces: in the west (the Baltic states and Poland) and the south (Ukraine),” the president stressed.

According to the president, Belarus and Russia announced plans to hold the joint exercises long time ago. These are regular exercises for the armies of the two countries. The Zapad exercise was held in 2021. This year’s exercise will span the southern border of Belarus. “It is important for us because we will have to deploy the Belarusian army contingent there. Lukashenko hits back at threats of U.S. Department of State

MINSK, 24 January (BelTA) – Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko hit back at the threats and patronizing tone of the U.S. Department of State representatives against Belarus as he approved the decision on the state border protection for 2022 on 24 January, BelTA has learned.

“Just a day ago I was told about the threats from the U.S. Department of State. They came to our diplomats in New York and laid out their threats: They will impose sanctions if we allow Putin and Russia this or that. If we decide to host nuclear weapons, they will do that. They have this patronizing tone towards Belarus,” the Belarusian leader said. “So I want to draw their attention to what I said when I visited Luninets. There’s not much we can add. We don’t need war. The United States, using Poland and Latvia, is pushing for this war. We have been a donor of security in the region and we have always been appreciated for that.”

“Look, it cannot get any worse. But if they want to bring us to the brink of an abyss, they know how we will respond to that. In the context of the situation developing around us, here in the region, and given the Washington’s recent statements, we will have to defend the borders of our country. We know how to do it, and we will do it for sure,” the Belarusian leader stressed.

Aleksandr Lukashenko said that the West in general and the European Union, in particular, should look into the mirror in the first place. “Why has the European Union curtailed cooperation on border issues? They have terminated this cooperation. It was not us who decided to escalate the situation. We just responded. We will act in the interests of our state, no matter what they tell us, no matter how much they threaten us,” the head of state said.

Western nations have stationed nearly 30,000 troops, equipment and weapons on Belarus’ western borders, President Alexander Lukashenko said Monday.

Speaking at a meeting with military officials at Minsk’s Independence Palace on plans for joint military exercises between Belarus and Russia, Lukashenko said Poland applied to NATO in order to place military equipment in the region.

“Why is this being done? There may be a consequence. They’re getting ready for something serious, at least (preparing for) something long-lasting,” he said.

Lukashenko also drew attention to the presence of US troops in countries to the west of Belarus.

“Poland and the Baltic states alternately host between 8,000 and 10,000 US troops. What will the Americans do here? Why are we and Russia being reproached for holding maneuvers, drills while they have come here from far away? There are some hot-heads calling for war. We hear these statements,” he added.

Pointing out that the situation on the southern borders of Belarus is also worrying, Lukashenko said there has been an increase in military units on the Ukrainian side.

“Ukraine continues to expand its forces by recruiting units of the National Guard from radical nationalists near our borders,” he said.

Lukashenko underlined that Ukraine carried out a special operation near the border with Belarus and that nearly 10,000 soldiers were deployed to the border region.

He recalled that last December, he agreed with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to hold military exercises on the western and southern borders of Belarus.

“Today we see that we need to hold serious exercises in these western and southern regions, on the ‘Belarusian balcony,’” he said.

Emphasizing that the exercises should be carried out to create a specific plan when faced with Poland, the Baltic states and Ukraine, Lukashenko noted that they will begin the joint exercises in his country in February.
